She was different. Her hazel eyes were an amazing sight. Boys stared. Most of the girls envied her. I was among them. And now I am here, to tell her story. She is not among us now. But I will get to that part soon enough. If I remember correctly… It was twenty years ago…
My name is Lilly.
I was young. I think I was seventeen. Lightly tanned skin, brown hair, and pretty brown eyes. I considered myself relatively attractive. I had a nice position in my school. Popular, but not enough to get asked out on dates by a different boy every day like Hillary. She had blonde hair, blue eyes, and the perfect nose. She was the head of the pack. She literally ruled the school. I had a couple of classes with her. We spent time talking some times. But I guess not enough to give me a higher ranking in kingdom we call High School.
I walked through the doors as I always did. It was then that I heard the news.
“Did you hear?” Sara asked. She was second in command. I guess I was third. But other girls could easily take that spot away from me.
“Uh… No,” I said. I looked at her outfit. A nice purple shirt with a low cut neckline, and her dark blue jeans.
“Hillary is LEAVING!” she emphasized the word “Leaving” as if it was the worst thing that could ever happen. She looked at me. Obviously awaiting a response. She looked at me. Trying to read my facial expression.
“Are you sure?” I asked. I really didn’t know what to make of the situation. If she really were moving, wouldn’t Sara take her place as most popular girl at school?
“Positive,” she said slowly. She sounded pretty thrilled to be the girl to be the first to hear the news.
“Wow,” I said. “Where is she moving off to?”
“Arizona,” she giggled as she said it. I could tell she was a bit excited. “Plus, I’M moving to a school in the next town over. It’s closer to my house.”
“Really?” I asked. This was beginning to be a bit much. Two girls moving in the same week? That sounded like a lot to me. Did that mean that I was the new popular?
“Most definitely!” she squealed. Then, she rushed off to the next girl and began chattering away about Hillary and herself.
I walked to my class, stunned with all of the news. I sat down and wrote down the homework assignment. Mr. Wright would assign our project partners for us. Most likely someone I couldn’t stand. I thought he didn’t like me then. He always paired me with the toughest kids to work with. Like Susie, she refused to do the project and I ended up getting an F for not including my partner. I had a feeling that he would again pair me with someone impossible as the last.
He smiled to me and read the pairings aloud to the class.
“Susie and Jim, Connor and Simon,” he called out. When he reached the end of the list he said, “ Lilly and Rob.”
My heart stopped. Rob was the most amazing guy in the whole school. His blonde hair and blue eyes made him hard to look away from. Plus, he had muscle. He wore sweaters that hugged his muscles so the world could see. His smile was like nothing I had ever seen before. Or at least, at that time it had been. I smiled to him and he winked playfully back.
It took me the whole period to get my heart rate back to normal, only to get sped up again when he walked up to me and said, “Hey Lilly. Um... How about you come over to my place this Saturday and we can get started?”
All I could do was nod. After he left I threw my hands in the air. “Halleluiah!” I shouted and walked to my next class.
I sat through the class but all I thought of was he. His blue eyes were stuck in my mind, and I was going to his house on Saturday. I squealed quietly.
At the lunch bell I walked to the table with all of my friends. “Guess your head now!” Martha said submissively. They all knew where I stood.
“Me?” I asked. I had honestly never thought that would happen to me. “Cool then!”
They all smiled and continued eating their lunches. They did seem cautious eating though. If Sara or Hillary criticized them, they were scarred for life.
After the final bell I walked home. I left a note for my mom and then went off to the gym. I shot hoops for about an hour. If was to play school basketball and make Varsity. I had a lot of catching up to do. I jogged home and showered. Since I spent most money on clothes, I had little money for gas. So I started riding my bike, walking, or jogging places that weren’t out of my jogging or biking range. I quickly clothed and slipped into bed. The next day Hillary and Sara would be gone. Everything she wanted was slowly falling into place.
I awoke the next morning to the sun pouring through the cracks in my blinds. I hopped out of bed and dressed. I remembered that Sara and Hillary had left and I all of a sudden felt in the mood for skipping. I skipped down the stairs and hopped into her seat. “Morning mom,” I sang. I had obviously had a huge confidence boost.
“Well aren’t you happy today!” Nora replied. She was my mom and also my best friend. I was one of the few who actually had a very close relationship with their mother.
“Why yes I am,” I said. My voice was pretty peppy so I toned it down a notch.
“May I ask why you are in this wonderful mood?” she asked. I didn’t know if I wanted to tell her about everything.
So I told her about Rob and my spot in the group of girls boosting up a huge level. She just nodded approvingly.
I brushed my teeth and started the walk to school. This walk seemed to take forever and I feared that I would be late. But strangely, I was ten minutes early for school. I nodded to all of my friends and headed to class early. I was anxious to see Rob. He smiled when I walked through the door and I returned it with a flirty smile and sat down in my seat. I wondered if I had made myself look stupid.
I listened to Mr. Wright but hardly. I was thinking of Saturday. Daydreaming of him deciding that I turned out to be his one true love. In the daydream I pictured the two of us staring into each other’s eyes until he leaned in to kiss me with his perfectly shaped lips. I closed my eyes and…
“Lilly!” Mr. Wright yelled. “I asked you for the answer about twenty times! Now, what is the birth date of William Shakespeare?”
Truth be told, I had no earthly idea. But I had to do something. Everything I did was now under constant surveillance.
“Um… I don’t know. Can I have a hint?” I said. I had a tone of joking in my voice. I had to sound like I knew, but was trying to be funny instead.
The class laughed and Mr. Wright glared at me, “No, you may not have a hint. But you may have an hour of detention after school with me!” he said. He handed me a slip and I slouched back into my chair. I looked back and winked at Rob like everything was okay. But I knew that my mom would kill me when she found out that I was talking back to school authority.
After school I did my time and called my mom. Telling her what happened under the glaring eyes of Mr. Wright. I walked home and braced myself for the trouble that awaited me at home.
“Oh Lilly, you are in for it now!” I heard my mother scold. “Do you have any idea how disrespectful you were today?” She stood there looking at me. Her eyes would not leave mine so I was unable to escape her glare.
“I know what I did mom, and trust me, I am regretting every second of it,” I muttered. I looked to the floor. But I felt her eyes on me.
“That’s was stupid and I am grounding you for a week young lady, no date on Saturday,” she said. But I heard a hesitant part of her telling her to go easy on me.
My eyes shot up and my glare met hers. “Oh! And you’ve never done anything wrong in your life!” I countered. “I bet your parents would have let you go see the guy of your dreams! But I guess they were better parents than you!” I stomped up the stairs and slammed my door. Locking myself in my room.
My mother and I got along most of the time, but when we got into fights, they were really bad. They usually lasted for days. I only knew one thing at that moment, there was no way I was going to miss out on seeing Rob that Saturday.
The next morning I left the house after brushing my teeth and dressing. I would wait to eat until lunch. I was giving my mother the cold shoulder. I confirmed my plans with Rob and we talked for about a half hour about how we should do our project.
At lunch I ate quite a bit. But ate it slowly so the others wouldn’t think I was a pig. I listened to the conversation Martha had started with Jane.
“I hear that Montana kicked her out,” Jane snickered. “She was causing too much trouble.”
“Really? Because I heard that she distracted all of the guys at the school. So they expelled her. So she moved to California.” Martha replied. I decided that it didn’t matter to me. I was content with what I had. But I had no idea what was coming.
It wasn’t until the next day that it happened… I walked into the school. Smiling to Rob when it hit me. She just walked right through me. Knocking over the book I had in my hand and my backpack fell as well. I turned to look at her and gasped. She was… Beautiful.
She had blonde hair; her delicate facial features made her look like an angel. Her hazel eyes made people stop and stare. I looked at her and waited for her to turn around. She never did. She just kept on walking. She swayed her hips as the models do and her perfect body made it look easy. I stared until she walked into the office. I picked up my things and walked to class dazed.
The whole class period I heard guys talking about her.
“She was a ten all the way!” Lenny said. His mouth in a huge grin.
“Man, she is an eleven!” Kyle joked. “And that bu-“
“Mr. Matthews! Is there something you want to share with the whole class?” Mrs. Limba asked. Her smile had been wiped off her face. She had heard what they had been saying.
“N-no…” Kyle mumbled and slid down into his chair.
The class laughed and continued the lesson.
At lunch I sat with all of my friends. Of course, they were talking about the new girl.
“Did you see those eyes?” Martha gasped. “They were amazing! I bet the school kicks her out within this week.”
“Really? Because I think that she will have some kind of affair with the principal so she won’t be kicked out!” Jane sneered. They were not the kind of girls who loved competition.
I sat and listened to the two talk for a long time. But after a while I looked around the courtyard for the girl. When I spotted her, I had a bit of trouble looking away. Her skin was not even close to tan. She was actually pale, but in an attractive way. She was sitting alone, but it seemed to have an affect on her. She was confident. I looked at what she was holding, an apple. But she would not eat it. She just sort of played with it. Supporting it with her perfect fingernails. I looked back to my group. They all had been staring too.
“Lilly, I will give five dollars to go talk to her!” Jane offered. We were always making bets. I could use five dollars.
“Done,” I joked. I stood up and winked at them all. I walked to the table where she sat. I all of a sudden felt without power. Like, she knew she was better than me.
“Hi,” I said. I looked at the apple. “I’m Lilly, what’s your name?” I looked at the apple still. But I felt her eyes on me.
“Jillian,” she said. I could hear amusement in her voice. I looked up at her. She was glaring, but it somehow still looked beautiful, which made it even more intimidating.
“H-hi,” I stuttered. Her blonde hair looked so soft. I was tempted just to reach out and touch it. “So… Are you new here?”
“Yeah. I am,” she said, in almost a mocking tone. Her eyes narrowed. She looked at the apple. I had a feeling I wasn’t welcome.
I turned and walked away. I could feel her cold stare, but I kept walking until I was back at my table. The girls all asked me questions but… I didn’t answer any of them. I was deep in thought. That small conversation had changed my life.
It was Saturday. I got up and dressed. I had to be ready to get out of the house before my mom woke up. Guilt filled me as I dressed in my low neckline shirt and dark blue jeans. I just put on some cute flats and walked out the door quietly. I had about four hours until the date. But there was no way that I could go back to the house until the date was over.
After four endless hours I went home and got into my car. This was one of the few moments when I would drive somewhere to make myself look more attractive. I had five dollars of gas to spend.
When I pulled into his driveway I slid out of the car and knocked on the door. His mother answered.
“Hello there! You must be Lilly,” she said with a warm smile. She gave me a sense of comfort.
“Hi, you must be Mrs. Himal,” I said politely. Making a good impression meant the world for him family.
“Oh please! Call me Sharon!” she said, and led me to the living room. Rob sat there waiting for me. I almost fainted when I saw him. He stood and smiled to me. I walked over to him and smiled back.
“Hey Rob,” I choked out. I never thought this day would come.
“Hey Lilly, we should get started,” he said with a smile and he took out the materials.
We worked for about two hours. That whole time I had completely forgotten the Hell that awaited me when I got home. My mom would make wild lions look like kittens.
“So… You know that Prom is coming up in about a month,” he said. I stopped breathing.
“Yeah,” I said weakly. I had no idea this would happen.
“Would you like to be my date? For Prom…” He said. He even seemed anxious that I would decline.
“Of course!” I said too quickly. I smiled. My heart was pounding in my chest and then I didn’t care if my mother grounded me again as long as I could see him.
I waved goodbye and drove home. When I reached a red light before I reached home, a shiny black car was beside me. I looked over to see whom the owner was and there she was.
She looked straight ahead, her eyes glued to the road. I prayed that she wouldn’t look over and of course… She did. Her eyes met mine and she looked at me with a mix of confusion and anger. Why would she be angry with me? I had just met her. I pulled into the driveway deep in thought. I looked into the living room window and there stood my mother, her eyes filled with sadness and anger.
I walk in the house prepared for anything, but she says nothing. Hey eyes were red. I knew then that something was not at all right.
“Mom… What happened?” I asked slowly. My eyes met hers and I could almost guess what she was about to say.
“Dad… Isn’t coming home sweetie…” she said breathlessly. Her eyes filled with tears again and we embraced. I hugged her tightly with tears pouring out of my eyes.
My father had just left for the war, and we had all been hoping that he would make enough money for our family to buy a bigger, nicer house.
“It’s okay baby,” she gasped while she sobbed. We had never imagined that this would happen to us, to him.
After hours of endless crying and embrace, I slowly walked up to my room and sat down on my bed and cried some more. There was no way that this could be happening. It all just seemed so… Unreal.
The next day I stayed home from school and my mother stayed from work. We didn’t talk the whole day about my father, or anything. It was like my home was dead. No one lived there anymore.
